Radithor was created in the 1920s by W.J.A. Bailey of New Jersey as "A Cure for the Living Dead." Consisting of a mixture of distilled water and radium, it eluded FDA regulation (since the ingredients were natural elements and not drugs!).

One of Radithor's biggest fans was Pittsburgh steel tycoon Eben Byers. On the advice of his doctor for an elbow injury Byers started taking Radithor regularly. Claiming increased energy and rejuvenation Byers highly recommended this elixir to all his friends, often sending cases as gifts.

Byers drank over 1400 bottles of the "certified radioactive water" ultimately necessitating the surgical removal of his jaw and mouth. His death in 1932 prompted the rapid removal of all radium based "cures" from the marketplace.
